Feedback & Constructive Criticism
One of the best parts of a creative community is helping one another grow.
Not every creator is looking for the same kind of feedback, however. Sometimes we simply want to share something we're proud of. Other times we're actively looking for detailed technical critique.
To help set expectations, High Tide Haven uses feedback levels.
When posting a project, you're welcome to specify which level of feedback you'd like to receive. If no level is specified, members should generally respond at Levels 1 through 3.
For Creators Sharing Their Work
* Choose the feedback level you're most comfortable receiving.
* You may change your preferred level at any time.
* Never feel obligated to request more critique than you want.
* Remember that criticism of your work is not criticism of you.
* Have fun and enjoy the creative process.
For Members Giving Feedback
* Be respectful and constructive at all times.
* Explain your suggestions whenever possible.
* Focus on helping the creator improve.
* Offer solutions, not just problems.
* Tailor your response to the feedback level requested.
Above all, remember there is a person behind every project.
---
Level 1: Encouragement
**Creator says:** "I'd mostly like to share my work."
**Feedback focus:** Positive reactions and encouragement.
Examples:
* "I love the color choices."
* "The texture work is fantastic."
* "This made me smile."
Level 2: Gentle Suggestions
**Creator says:** "I'd like encouragement, but I'm open to a few suggestions."
**Feedback focus:** Mostly positive feedback with light critique.
Examples:
* "The overall piece is wonderful. You might consider adjusting the contrast in a few areas."
* "I love the character design, though the background feels a little busy."
Level 3: Balanced Critique
**Creator says:** "I'm open to honest feedback and improvement ideas."
**Feedback focus:** Equal attention to strengths and opportunities for growth.
Examples:
* Point out what works well.
* Identify areas that could improve.
* Suggest techniques, tools, or approaches that may help.
Level 4: Technical Critique
**Creator says:** "Please focus on improvement, even if the feedback is detailed."
**Feedback focus:** In-depth critique and specific recommendations.
Examples:
* Composition and layout
* Color theory
* Lighting and shading
* Construction and technique
* Materials and craftsmanship
* Presentation and polish
Feedback should be direct, informative, and solution-oriented.
Level 5: Workshop Mode
**Creator says:** "I'm actively seeking the most thorough critique possible."
**Feedback focus:** Detailed analysis intended to maximize growth and skill development.
This level assumes the creator is comfortable receiving extensive feedback and understands that responders may focus almost entirely on areas for improvement.
Even at this level:
* Remain respectful.
* Remain professional.
* Offer explanations and solutions.
* Never attack, belittle, or mock the creator.
The goal is growth, not discouragement.

## The Golden Rule
No matter which feedback level is selected, constructive criticism should always be constructive.
If your comment would make someone less excited to create, reconsider how you're delivering it.
We're here to help each other learn, improve, and enjoy the journey.
